Side Quest

Not pictured: lots of boring corridors now floor tiled, filler'd and sanded, ready for sealant + base coats. Too dull.

Pictured: well, it started out as a maybe magical circle, maybe shrine, then a slight pivot into a circular room because I wanted to have some of them a bit not-a-box, then - because I have a palantir, a magic portal, a little golden statue trap (yes, precisely like the one in Raiders) all needing to find a home - it's become a general purpose entrance/exit and side-quest room. The beauty of neodymium.

a round room

I do have something of a special plan for the wall after it's painted, inspired by a recent viewing of Conan the Destroyer.

Also finished the gaol now, also via magnets...

The Dungeon Emerges

Well this is certainly a lot faster than building space hulks.

The library, including easter egg...

A little bit of Heroquest, a little Warhammer Quest, and a little skyrim so far...

Early days in the dungeon

A brief update, for at an early stage there is much to do and little to show.

first three sections underway another perspective

So what we have here is a couple of drawers from Ikea's Moppe storage (I bought three sets), something I'd seen done before, wonderfully, as an Egyptian tomb by Shed Wars (check it out here, and here).

Reactor Progress 9/N - Bad News & Paint

Bad news up front. Due to family commitments made on my behalf, I can't make Salute 2020 any more.

That's been pretty demoralising and demotivating obviously, so it's taken a while to get to another post. I guess the good news is the build is complete and it's base coated up now (which is hard to do in between the rainy days). A few status pics then:

Reactor Progress 8/N - Main Build Complete

I mean reallllly close to done. Really close.

Vault door done. Took me a while to work out a plausible mechanism for it until I came across this video segment. Then the gangway problem took a while to work out (simply because of the physical constraints) until I envisaged something curving out of the floor. Past that it's just fiddly details e.g. covered the diamond tread in the panels with some tediously cut styrene sheet. A trio of magnetised bases to the left and right of the gangway and top left of the entrance for the usual flex reasons.

Reactor Progress 7/N

Through quite a bit of real life disruption, I actually feel like I'm really getting somewhere now. Which is just as well really, since I got myself a Salute table for 2020!

Yay, go me!

vault-tec...
sprue-cycled

Starting with the biggest change (and yet the most to do) - a suitably imposing vault-tec style doorway. Bit of a bugger to cut out really, but also a lot of grief in the planning. I spent quite a bit of hemming and hawing time trying to make it functional, and conceiving how it could possible function in-world but ultimately the constraints of having some sort of walkway actually through the door and not nearly enough depth (piss poor planning etc) quashed those thoughts, so the door is glued.

So some oddments and curved sprues to gee it up, but still needs a lot of gubbinz to look convincing and a walkway that somehow looks like it might retract.

Reactor Progres 6/N - Lighting and Not Lighting

I really wanted this to be... more... but OMFG I hate electrics.

greenlit

So the green lights are ok. For now I guess.

Reactor Progress 5/N

Lighting Options.

As part of the zinge order I also bought some pink and orange LEDs to add some options to what I had already (blue, red, purple, green).

I'm quite keenly aware that I have a tendency to fall back to blue/red contrasting schemes in almost everything I've painted in the last few years, and since the success of the large scale OSL in the airlock piece, I know I definitely want this reactor piece to be another huge OSL colour splash in the sea of grey/black pieces and I want it to be anything but blue/red.

Reactor Progress 4/N

Framing done! Now we give it some life.

And we're definitely a reactor now...

the start of a door

Inspired by this pic found on some google image search or another, I went an ordered some giant flexi resin cables from Zinge Industries.

Anomaly Progress 3/N

AKA "measure 173 times, cut 16 or so".

Also AKA "life is frustrating".

So, the lift then.

And how we got there, somewhat sped up... Quite a long one this.
